Planet Vs Plastics is the focus for this year’s Chamber of Commerce Annual Earth-day Cleanup when more than two thousand volunteers situated in teams all over the Cayman Islands will be picking up litter from our beaches, parks, and roadsides – keeping our islands beautiful for tourists and residents alike.
“Planet Vs Plastics” expands the scope. By acting locally, we can set an example for the region and the world. The threat of plastic pollution has become increasingly apparent for the future of ecosystems all over the world –particularly in the Cayman Islands where marine wildlife is threatened. Animals that inhabit Cayman’s beautiful coral reefs may ingest floating plastic items. Turtles are known to mistake plastic bags for jellyfish – one of their favorite foods.
Microplastics are known to pose a risk to wildlife and human life too. Our understanding of issues such as global warming shifts our focus as we gain a deeper understanding of our collective stewardship as an integral part of our quality of life, safety, and ultimately our survival.
Many Chamber businesses large and small are doing much more, with more in-house recycling programmes, the use of electric vehicles, or the incorporation of many energy-efficiency measures and renewables into new or existing buildings.
Cayman National, one of the Major Sponsors for the Chamber’s Earth-Day Cleanup, explained why they wanted to support Earth Day, and why they, too, believe that being good corporate citizens means being good stewards of our reefs, our island, and our earth.
“At Cayman National, it is important for our organisation to dedicate time and resources to support the preservation of Cayman's natural environment. Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond our business operations,” said Karen Ebanks said Vice President - Marketing & Communications.
“We are proud sponsors of the Green Tips commercials that are currently playing on DMS Radio stations. We have partnered with the National Trust for the Cayman Islands to have these commercials recorded by the kids from ‘Protect Our Future.’ In addition, we will be planting 50 trees in celebration of our 50th Anniversary.”
“We actively promote ‘green tips and ‘recycle tips,’ within our organisation, and we have placed recycle bins in all of our offices and branches.
“Cayman National’s GreenLiving programme offers significant green lending opportunities. Personal loans with preferential rates are available on products such as solar panels and electric vehicles, helping people make the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy and reduce their carbon footprint. Cayman National’s GreenLiving programme offers loans of $10,000+ with 100% financing available to qualifying borrowers for hybrid and electric vehicles.
“Other eligible items include solar panels or batteries, energy-smart shutters, and other energy-smart upgrades. For more information, visit caymannational.com or speak to a member of the customer services team at any of six Cayman National Customer Service Centers located across all three Cayman Islands. From products and services on offer to embracing technology and moving towards paperless banking, we are committed to a greener Cayman.”
