Women’s Update- Game 1
Cayman Women Display Tremendous Heart Against Fiji at the Commonwealth Games
The Cayman Islands Women’s 3x3 National Team delivered a courageous and determined performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, battling Fiji for the full ten minutes before eventually falling 16-6 in a contest that showcased the grit and defensive character of Cayman basketball.
From the opening tip, the Cayman women refused to be intimidated by a physically imposing Fiji side. Every basket was contested, every rebound was fought for, and our players forced Fiji to earn every single point they scored.
While Fiji’s size gave them an advantage around the basket, Cayman responded with relentless hustle, disciplined team defense, and an unwavering commitment to compete on every possession.
With just two minutes remaining, the game was still well within reach, with Fiji holding a narrow 11-6 advantage. Cayman had frustrated one of the stronger teams in the competition with its defensive intensity and never stopped believing.
In the closing moments, Fiji managed to create some separation by knocking down a pair of difficult long-range shots, extending the final margin. However, the scoreline does not fully reflect just how competitive the game truly was.
Taking a quality international team the entire length of the game is a testament to the resilience, toughness, and competitive spirit of the Cayman women. Their effort on the defensive end was outstanding, and they demonstrated that they are capable of competing with established basketball nations on one of the world’s biggest stages.
Every possession reflected the pride of wearing the Cayman Islands jersey. Every defensive stop, loose ball, and hustle play reinforced the culture that this team is building—a culture founded on determination, unity, and never giving up.
As this young program continues to gain valuable international experience, performances like this provide confidence that Cayman women’s basketball is moving in the right direction.
The final score may read Fiji 16, Cayman Islands 6, but the performance told a much bigger story.
Our women proved they belong on this stage, and with each international competition, they continue to close the gap against some of the world’s best.
The future of Cayman women’s basketball is incredibly bright, and today’s performance was another proud step forward.
