Following the well-deserved Mid-Term Break, schools were back in action this past Saturday, October 31 as the always entertaining CUC Primary Football League (PFL) and Girls’ Primary Football League (GPFL) returned to venues across the Island. In Group A in the CUC PFL and GPFL, Cayman International School (CIS) and Sir John A. Cumber Primary put on a display of exciting attacking football filled with ‘bone-crunching’ tackles, great goals and superb goalkeeping. In the CUC PFL Under 9 game, CIS’ Lalo Perry grabbed two goals in the 17th and 28th minutes to lift his side to a 2-0 win over the boys from West Bay. In the Under 11 game, CIS’ Liam Romizowski opened the scoring in the 16th second in what could be the quickest goal scored this season as he took advantage of some questionable defending from the Sir John A.
Cumber back three. To their credit, the West Bay boys quickly recovered from that initial shock of conceding so early and the game took on a more even tempo. The majority of play remained mostly in the midfield area with occasional forays into the opponents’ attacking area. Sir John A. Cumber evened the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute as the energetic Mason Butler pounced on a loose ball to poke it past the CIS goalkeeper.
There would be no further scoring thanks to the superb goalkeeping from Sir John A. Cumber’s Dillian Wright, who made some truly unbelievable saves to continuously frustrate the CIS attackers for the remainder of the game. In the CUC GPFL game, CIS’ Finley Nixon scored an unstoppable free kick in the 28th minute that found the top corner of the goal to lift her school over a very talented and well-disciplined Sir John A. Cumber Primary team 1-0. In other CUC PFL Group A Under 9 action, Marie Martin Primary defeated Cayman Prep 9B 3-1 and St. Ignatius Catholic drew with Theoline L. McCoy Primary 1-1. In Under 11 Group A games, Marie Martin Primary downed Cayman Prep 11B 5-1 (respect rule) and St. Ignatius Catholic defeated Theoline L. McCoy Primary 3-0.
In Group B play in the Under 9 division, Cayman Prep 9A beat Island Primary 9B 4-0 (respect rule), First Baptist CS drew with Island Primary 9C 1-1, NorthEast Schools defeated Sir John A. Cumber Primary 9B 3-0 and Prospect Primary outlasted Red Bay Primary 4-1. In the Under 11 division, Cayman Prep 11A downed Island Primary 11A 5-1 (respect rule), Cayman Brac beat First Baptist CS 3 0, Footsteps School got the better of NorthEast Schools 4-0 (respect rule) and Prospect Primary defeated Red Bay Primary 4-1. In the only other CUC GPFL Group A game, Cayman Prep GB downed Marie Martin Primary 4-0 (respect rule).
