The Cayman Islands Financial Services Institute (FSI) will host AML Best Practices for the Cayman Islands Legal Sector, an in-person seminar on 20 November 2026, at the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort. The seminar will feature guest speakers from the Legal Services Supervisory Authority (LSSA), alongside Paul Byles, Director of FTS Cayman, and Elisabeth Lees, Co-founder of Claritas.
As anti-money laundering obligations continue to evolve, law firms and legal professionals face growing expectations around governance, client due diligence, suspicious activity reporting and ongoing compliance oversight. This half-day seminar combines practical presentations with an interactive panel discussion on real-world compliance challenges facing law firms and legal practitioners.
Topics will include:
- The Cayman Islands AML framework for legal services
- Registration, reporting and supervisory expectations of the LSSA
- Governance and risk management considerations for law firms
- Client due diligence, ongoing monitoring and suspicious activity reporting
- Preparing for supervisory reviews and independent AML audits
“Law firms are on the front line of the Cayman Islands’ defence against financial crime, and the expectations placed on them are rising,” said Paul Byles, Director of the Financial Services Institute. “Featuring guest speakers from the LSSA lets us bring practitioners direct insight from the supervisor, along with practical tools they can apply in their firms the next day. This seminar reflects FSI’s commitment to supporting integrity and compliance across our financial services sector.”
Speakers and Programme
The programme will include two sessions: "Understanding the Cayman AML Framework for the Legal Sector" presented by Casandra Seetahal, General Counsel of LSSA, and "Roles and Responsibilities of the Legal Services Supervisory Authority" presented by Shaná Donovan, Head of LSSA. After a networking break, Paul Byles and Elisabeth Lees will jointly present "Strengthening Law Firm Compliance – Governance, Risk and Reporting", covering law firm governance, business risk assessments, client due diligence, ongoing monitoring and suspicious activity reporting.
The seminar closes with a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Paul, alongside Casandra, Shaná and Elizabeth. They will discuss integrating AML best practices into daily operations, balancing legal privilege with compliance obligations, and preparing for LSSA and independent AML audits.
