The Cayman Islands Commonwealth Games Association (CICGA) congratulates Team Cayman on another encouraging day of competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as the nation's swimmers concluded their competition with determined performances across individual and relay events at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
The final day of swimming competition saw Cayman Islands athletes continue to demonstrate resilience, technical improvement and competitive spirit.
The day's standout individual performance came from Connor Macdonald in the men's 1,500 metres freestyle, where he produced an outstanding swim to finish in 16:40.92. Competing in one of the programme's most demanding endurance events, Macdonald approached the race with disciplined pacing, settling into a consistent rhythm from the opening stages and maintaining even splits throughout the distance. His composure and endurance were rewarded with a powerful final 50 metres, allowing him to finish more than eight seconds faster than his entry time, a significant improvement at Commonwealth Games level. Macdonald's performance reflected the continued progression he has demonstrated throughout the Games, having also contributed to multiple relay national records during the opening week of competition.
Eli Bain returned to the pool for the men's 200 metres freestyle, delivering another composed performance against a competitive international field. Bain recorded a time of 1:59.25, producing a strong opening 150 metres with controlled pacing and consistent stroke technique. Although the pace increased during the closing stages, Bain maintained his composure to finish fourth in his heat, concluding another encouraging individual performance during his Commonwealth Games campaign. Throughout the week, Bain has competed across multiple individual events and relay races, continuing to gain valuable experience at the senior international level while contributing to Team Cayman's record-breaking relay performances.
The Cayman Islands men's 4x100 metres Medley Relay concluded the swimming programme with another determined team effort. The quartet of Luke Higgo, Will Sellars, Daniel Kish and Connor Macdonald combined to record 3:59.66, finishing sixth in their heat. Higgo provided a strong opening backstroke leg with a clean start and sharp underwater work before handing over smoothly to Sellars on breaststroke. Sellars maintained the team's momentum through the middle stages before Kish delivered another composed butterfly leg, setting up Macdonald to anchor the relay with a strong freestyle finish.
The performance reflected the teamwork and consistency that have characterised the Cayman Islands relay squads throughout the Games.
The Cayman Islands women's 4x100 metres Medley Relay also returned to the pool to conclude its Glasgow 2026 campaign. The team of Riley Watson, Sierrah Broadbelt, Kyra Rabess and Harper Barrowman showed determination throughout the race. Watson provided a clean opening backstroke leg before Broadbelt continued the relay on breaststroke despite an awkward changeover. Rabess produced a strong butterfly leg to keep the team competitive before Barrowman closed confidently on freestyle. Although the team was subsequently disqualified because of an infringement during the breaststroke leg, the athletes demonstrated resilience and professionalism throughout the race and completed another valuable international relay performance.
As the swimming programme concludes, Team Cayman can reflect with pride on one of its most successful Commonwealth Games swimming campaigns.
Across six days of competition, Cayman Islands swimmers established seven national records, qualified for multiple Commonwealth Games finals, reached individual semi-finals and produced numerous personal best performances while competing against many of the world's leading swimmers.
The performances throughout Glasgow 2026 are a testament to the dedication of the athletes, the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association (CIASA), Technical Director and Lead Coach Jacky Pellerin, Coach Darren Mew, and the wider support team whose commitment has helped elevate Cayman Islands swimming on the international stage.
