The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) is proud to recognize the determination, resilience and performances of Team Cayman as competition continues at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
Four young athletes are representing the Cayman Islands across two sporting disciplines: swimming and beach volleyball.
The delegation includes swimmers Kate Galatopoulos and Lev Fahy, alongside beach volleyball athletes Rares Pomian and Ronald Dylan Simpson.
With beach volleyball competition now concluded for the Cayman Islands, attention turns to the swimming pool, where Team Cayman has already celebrated a personal-best performance and looks forward to five additional events over the coming days.
Swimming: Personal Best, Valuable Experience and More Events Ahead Team Cayman’s swimming campaign has delivered encouraging performances, highlighted by an impressive personal best from Kate Galatopoulos in the women’s 400-metre freestyle. Galatopoulos recorded a new personal-best time of 4:45.87, finishing first in her heat. Her performance marks a significant individual achievement on the Youth Olympic stage and reflects the dedication, preparation and commitment invested in her development. Fellow swimmer Lev Fahy competed in the men’s 100-metre freestyle, recording a time of 53.11 seconds and finishing seventh in his heat. While the result was not what Fahy had hoped for, the young swimmer remains determined and has quickly refocused his attention on his upcoming events.
His next opportunity comes on Tuesday, 3 November, when he competes in the men’s 100-metre backstroke.
The ability to regroup, reflect and return to competition with renewed focus is an important part of an athlete’s development, particularly at the international level. Galatopoulos will return to competition on Wednesday, 4 November, in the women’s 50-metre freestyle, while Fahy will also compete in the men’s 50-metre freestyle that day.
Both athletes remain focused on their remaining events, seeking to build on their performances and make the most of their Youth Olympic experience. Beach Volleyball: Young Cayman Duo Gains Valuable International Experience At the beach volleyball venue in Saly West, Rares Pomian and Ronald Dylan Simpson have concluded their Youth Olympic Games competition, gaining valuable exposure against some of the world’s emerging beach volleyball talent.
The young Caymanian duo faced a demanding opening match against Austria, one of the competition’s top three seeded teams.
Despite a difficult opening set, which ended 21–2, the pair demonstrated improvement in the second set, increasing their competitiveness and finishing 21–9. Their subsequent match against the Islamic Republic of Iran provided another opportunity to experience the technical demands, speed and intensity of international competition. The Cayman Islands pair fell 21–6 and 21–5.
The Cayman Islands duo concluded their beach volleyball campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, falling 21–5, 21–5.
Despite the result, Pomian and Simpson gained valuable international experience. Although the results were not in Cayman’s favour, the competition provided an important opportunity for both athletes to assess their current abilities against international standards and identify the areas requiring further development to become competitive at this level. Throughout their matches, both athletes demonstrated improvements in aspects of their game, showing an increasing understanding of the demands of elite beach volleyball. Rares Pomian, one of the youngest athletes in the beach volleyball competition, was particularly notable for his fighting spirit and the development of his technical abilities throughout the tournament.
Despite facing more experienced opposition, Pomian demonstrated determination, adaptability and a willingness to compete for every point.
His progression throughout the competition was an encouraging indication of his potential as he continues to develop in the sport. Simpson also demonstrated growth during the competition, with both athletes gaining a clearer understanding of the physical, tactical and technical standards required to compete successfully on the international stage. For the young duo, their first appearance at a major multisport Games represents an important milestone in their sporting journeys.
The experience will provide a valuable foundation for future training, technical development and international competition as they work toward closing the gap between their current performances and the standards required at this level. The CIOC congratulates both athletes and their coaching team for their commitment, resilience and representation of the Cayman Islands.
