Following an individual & detailed search of the suspicious packages recovered on a vessel, intercepted by the Cayman Islands Coast Guard and RCIPS’ Air Operations Unit, along the southern coastline of Grand Cayman on Friday, 29 May, the police can confirm that concealed within the recovered parcels containing 505 pounds of ganja was a quantity of cocaine weighing 10 kilograms and small quantities of other illicit substances, ketamine and MDMA weighing less than one kilogram, along with a firearm and several rounds of assorted ammunition.
“This significant recovery demonstrates the impact of a major investment in law enforcement capabilities to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition through our islands,” said Commissioner Walton.
“The RCIPS continues to work closely with our local and international law enforcement partners to maintain a zero-tolerance approach to drug and firearms trafficking and will continue to apply all necessary resources to combat this criminal activity.”
The two men, age 44 and age 22, who were found on board the vessel and arrested, were both formally charged with Importation of Ganja. The 22-year-old was also charged with Illegal Landing in relation to the initial arrest and recovery.
They appeared before the court on 14 July, where they were further charged with Importation of Cocaine, Importation of Ketamine, Importation of MDMA (Ecstasy), Possession of An Unlicensed Firearm, and Possession of An Unlicensed Ammunition.
They were remanded in custody pending a further court appearance on 29 July.
