The Water Authority–Cayman has completed its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Pilot Project.
The initiative, which began in February of this year, tested two advanced smart metering systems and two communications technologies under local conditions. These technologies have the potential to enhance operational efficiency, improve leak detection, and provide customers with more timely water usage information.
“Completing this pilot marks a major milestone in our journey toward modernising the Authority’s piped water distribution network,” says Dr Gelia Frederick van Genderen, Director of the Water Authority. “The insights gained from testing advanced metering technologies will play a critical role in shaping our next steps and ensuring that any future deployment delivers meaningful benefits to our customers and our operations.”
Smart meters installed during the pilot will remain in place, but communication features are now inactive, and will be read manually to calculate bills. The Authority will analyse the pilot data over the coming months to guide future decision-making on full AMI deployment, including business case development, procurement strategy, system integration and customer benefits.
