The Water Authority has concluded its 35th anniversary celebrations in Cayman Brac, celebrating its longstanding service to the community through student education and donations supporting local families and healthcare.
As part of the anniversary activities, the Authority partnered with Dr Brian Jones, Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Alberta, during Geology Education Week to connect students with the islands’ geology, water resources, and STEM career opportunities.
On 5 October, a full school assembly was held at the Layman E. Scott High School, where students received a joint presentation highlighting careers in the water industry. They learned about opportunities at the Authority and heard how employees who grew up in Cayman Brac and walked the same school halls, now hold important STEM roles within the organisation. Year 11 geography students also joined Dr Jones on a field trip to sites of geological significance around the island.
The team subsequently visited Creek and Spot Bay Primary School and West End Primary School where younger students learned where tap water comes from, and how the Authority produces safe, affordable potable water. Dr Jones also led interactive “rock clinics”, giving students a hands-on opportunity to learn about different rock formations.
The anniversary year concludes with two contributions to the Cayman Brac community. The Authority was proud to donate $60,000 to the HOPE Oncology and Dialysis Centre, planned for the Health Services Authority's Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac. Once completed, the facility will provide access to critical, life-saving treatment closer to home.
The Authority has also donated a Mamava lactation pod to Charles Kirkconnell International Airport in Cayman Brac. Located in the departure lounge, the private space allows travelling mothers to nurse or pump comfortably. The pod officially opened on 21 October 2026 and features a photograph by Water Authority employee and photographer Dione Scotland Rivero, capturing a Brown Booby mother and her chick on the Bluff.
Water Authority Director Dr Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said the final activities reflected the purpose of the anniversary. "Our customers are at the heart of our work, so it was important to close this milestone year by investing in the community's future," she said. "Inspiring students to consider careers in the water industry and STEM fields, supporting life-saving healthcare close to home, and making travel easier for families are all ways of saying thank you. We are grateful to everyone who celebrated with us this year."
Earlier anniversary events included a Customer Appreciation Day at the Aston Rutty Civic Centre in May and an Employee Appreciation event in July 2026.
