The 18th Annual Butterfield Young Musician of the Year competition took centre stage on Friday, 27 February at the George Town Public Library, showcasing eight of the Cayman Islands' most promising young performers in an evening of exceptional musical artistry.
Sixteen-year-old Alexa Valencia was awarded the 2026 Young Musician of the Year title after delivering two polished and expressive piano performances. A student of Spark! School of Performing Arts and St. Ignatius Catholic School, Valencia impressed adjudicators with her technical command and refined musicianship.
In reflecting on her musical journey, Valencia shared, "Piano practice has grounded me and remained a constant among my other interests. This competition encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and into the spotlight." She also expressed the encouragement of her parents, teachers, music school and friends.
Runner-up honours went to flautist Charlotte Gothar, representing the CayMusicA (Cayman Arts Festival) Starlight Programme, who performed technically demanding pieces, demonstrating both precision and expressive depth.
The competition also featured standout performances by Jude Solomon and Marvin Smith of Spark! School of Performing Arts, Justin Sy of Cayman Music School, Ryan Nock of Nicole Bodden's Studio, and Isaiah Falconer of Serenade.
This year's adjudication panel comprised local music educators Stephanie Williams and Arek Nicholson, alongside esteemed musician and professor Dr. Catherine Rand from the United States. Praising the high standard performances, Dr. Rand remarked, "Tonight we heard the eight best players from the islands." She encouraged the students to fully immerse themselves in their performances, adding that to truly communicate music, one must "breathe it, feel it, to play it."
In his written welcome message, Michael McWatt, Managing Director of Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited, highlighted music's power to connect and inspire, thanking the Department of Education Services, participating schools, teachers and families for their continued support.
Hon. Rolston Anglin, Minister for Finance and Economic Development and Education and Training, also attended the event, commending all finalists for their dedication and artistry. "Every single one of you are outstanding musicians, and I congratulate you and encourage you to continue your journey and inspire other young people to pursue music."
