The Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation’s second annual Beyond The Scar fashion show delivered an unforgettable evening of emotion, empowerment and extraordinary courage on Friday evening at Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman.

More than simply a runway event, Beyond The Scar brought together breast cancer survivors, medical professionals, creatives, volunteers and the wider community in a powerful celebration of resilience, identity and hope beyond diagnosis.

The evening featured ten survivor models who walked the runway in front of a packed audience, sharing not only fashion and style, but their stories, their vulnerability and their strength. For many of the women involved, the experience proved deeply transformational.

One participant shared afterwards:

“I am truly at a loss for words for the magic that happened last night. It’s a night I will never forget. I felt held, embraced, safe and supported. You have created a beautiful event that I hope grows in future years. Beyond blessed and grateful. My heart overflows.”

The evening’s VIP guest was internationally recognised author, speaker and breast cancer advocate Christine Handy, whose presence added profound emotional resonance to the event. Handy, a former international model and breast cancer survivor, spoke openly about redefining beauty and identity after cancer.

Following the event, Handy said:

“I have been involved in hundreds of cancer events and yours surpasses them all. The women who walked had an experience that will delight them their entire lives. You did that for them. You should be so proud. I am truly honoured to have been a small part of it.”

Chief Administrator of the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation, Beverly Edgington, reflected on the significance of the evening:

“Beyond The Scar was never simply about a runway. It was about creating a space where women could feel seen again - celebrated not despite what they have been through, but because of the strength, beauty and resilience they carry through it. Watching these women rediscover confidence in themselves has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. This evening reminded all of us that beauty is not diminished by diagnosis. It is deepened by it.  Nor was it about raising money but more importantly we want to raise awareness and celebrate a life worth living! “
The creative vision behind the show was led by Creative Director Lauren Sonnen, whose deeply personal and emotionally charged curation shaped every aspect of the experience.

Sonnen reflected:

“These women give me absolute hope. Beyond The Scar was never just about fashion - it was about showing that no one should feel less-than because of what they have endured. Watching these women step into the light with such courage and strength was something truly extraordinary.”

The Foundation acknowledged the extraordinary work of the team behind the scenes who brought the evening to life, including Creative Director Lauren Sonnen, producer and show manager Sophie, backstage manager Emilie, designer Isy B, Robyn Diamond and her hair and make-up team, the volunteers working Front of House and backstage, photographers, videographers and the many individuals who gave their time, talent and energy to support the women throughout their journey to the runway. And of course the BCF team themselves who give tirelessly to the Foundation and people they serve.

Special recognition was also given to Dr. Jane Martinez from Baptist Health International, who participated in Friday evening’s panel discussion and, in the words shared during the event, “walked alongside the ladies in every sense of the word.”

The Foundation also expressed heartfelt gratitude to its sponsors whose support made the event possible.

VIP Headline Sponsor Baptist Health International enabled the Foundation to welcome Christine Handy to the Cayman Islands, while Haute Headline Runway Sponsors Health City Cayman Islands and AI Rentals played a central role in helping create the spectacular production.

Additional support came from Blush Sponsors Doctors Hospital Cayman, the Health Services Authority Cayman Islands, Get Nailed and More and Dolphin Point, alongside Pink Ribbon Sponsors Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman, La Roche Posay/CEL, Centre Pointe Dance Studio, Armada Studios, Guy Waller and RC.

Funds raised through Beyond The Scar will continue supporting the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation’s work in education, early detection initiatives, wellness support and access to care for individuals navigating breast cancer within the Cayman Islands community.
