The Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) celebrates the 2026 World Red Cross Day on May 8th, honoring the compassion and humanitarian spirit of volunteers at home and around the world making a difference in their communities. For 65 years, since 1961, the CIRC has stood for neighbourly care—hallmarks of the very best of who we are in the Cayman Islands.

This year’s theme, inspired by that of the British Red Cross, focuses on “Power of Kindness," underscoring the importance of not only coming together in times of crisis, but in the efforts we can make every day to improve the lives of others.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, observed annually on May 8th, marks the birth of Henry Dunant, the visionary founder of the Red Cross Movement, and winner of the first Nobel Peace Prize. Henry Dunant, moved by the suffering he witnessed after the Battle of Solferino in 1859, promoted the idea that civilians should come together voluntarily to care for wounded soldiers from all sides, regardless of allegiance, and pushed for the creation of neutral relief organizations to make this possible. His vision led to the establishment of what is now the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which has grown into a global humanitarian network comprising 191 National Societies, supported by 17 million volunteers, and reaching roughly 160 million people each year.

In Cayman, the entire month of May is dedicated to Red Cross Month, during which the CIRC highlights programme activities and education.

Established in 1961 by Mrs. Ethel Cook-Bodden and Ms. Janilee Clifford as a Committee of the British Red Cross, the CIRC has evolved significantly from its initial focus on fundraising for the hospital, to encompass broader community resilience efforts, particularly during the annual hurricane season.

Today, the CIRC stands as a dynamic force within the region, with five core programmes: Disaster Management, First Aid and Aquatics Training, Child Protection and Sexuality Education, Support Our Seniors (SOS), and Community Engagement, under which the Thrift Shop operates.

Functioning as an auxiliary to the government, the CIRC collaborates closely with agencies such as HMCI, the Department of Children and Family Services, HSA, and the Ministries of Health and Education in disaster preparedness, response, and child protection awareness and education. Additionally, partnerships with community and private sector entities bolster efforts to assist vulnerable populations.

Throughout May, the CIRC intensifies its programme activities across four key areas: promoting humanitarian principles and values, disaster response, disaster preparedness, and health and community care.

In 2025, the First Aid Programme trained 1700+ individuals in life-saving techniques and provided support at 73 community events, offering reassurance  to participants and organizers alike. A dedicated team of 49 volunteers were trained and ready to assist when called upon.

The Thrift Shop Community Outreach initiative continues to serve the most vulnerable by supplying essential goods to 155 families in 2025 alone, including household items, clothing, and furniture, all provided free of charge.

Furthermore, 60+ volunteers stepped forward to serve their community as shelter managers, fully prepared for deployment across 19 shelters in Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands.

The organization's commitment to community resilience is further exemplified by the training of 102 new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members (81 in Grand Cayman, 21 in Cayman Brac) and the continuous support provided to seniors through companionship and vital resources. In 2025, 92 volunteers received specialized training in geriatrics, enabling them to engage effectively with seniors, and facilitating 802 trips for seniors to medical appointments and other essential activities.

Moreover, the CIRC conducted awareness sessions on HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections for youth-focused organizations, reaching a total of 599 teenagers and young adults and 97 CIRC volunteers.

As the Cayman Islands Red Cross celebrates World Red Cross Day and Red Cross Month, it reaffirms its dedication to fostering a resilient, compassionate community through proactive humanitarian initiatives and unwavering support for those in need.

“The reality is that when it comes to the work, May is another month with additional activities,” explains Director Jondo Obi. “However, it is important for us to celebrate not only May 8th but highlight the work throughout the month because there is something really special about the Red Cross Movement, and May offers us an opportunity to remind ourselves, our volunteers and our community of that,” she adds.

The CIRC’s dedication to its mission, as well as its collaboration with government, private sector, and community organizations, demonstrates the importance of humanitarian efforts in the Cayman Islands. The CIRC’s programs are fundamental to supporting those in need and building a stronger community for everyone.
