The Strategic Coordination Group met this morning at 8:30 am regarding the Severe Weather impacting the Cayman Islands. Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson and HMCI Director, Dani Coleman led the meeting, which included updates from the Cayman National Weather Service, District Administration in the Sister Islands, the Cayman Islands Regiment and Government agencies such as the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, Cayman Islands Fire Service, C.I Coast Guard, Cabinet Office, the Governor’s Office, Cayman Islands Fire Service, Public Works Department, Department of Environmental Health and Health Services Authority. The meeting focused on preliminary reports of impacts and steps being taken to ensure a speedy return to normality following the passage of the storm from the Cayman area.

Initial reports have shown that the cold front was been quite impactful and caused significant damage to some areas, mainly on the Northwest Point and along Seafarers Way in Grand Cayman, as well as on the main roadway in Cayman Brac. Official damage assessments will occur once the wave activity decreases and roadways are made safe.

The public is reminded that the Red Cross shelter on 34 Huldah Avenue (across from the Farmers Market), is open and residents are encouraged to visit www.redcross.org.ky for more information about their shelter. Two other shelter teams are on standby and will be opened to the public as needed

Hazard Management Cayman Islands encourages residents to continue to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to stay away from the shoreline. Allow the emergency responders to do their jobs safely by being safe and staying off the roads when possible. This includes adhering to road closures by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. The Cayman Islands Government is actively working to protect the public and thanks the public for following all guidelines.
