The Department of Education Services (DES) advises that clean-up efforts are underway at the John Gray High School following the overflow of sewage on the school’s north wing earlier today (18 June).
The incident resulted from a blockage to the lavatory system, which was detemined to have been caused by the improper disposal of a can by a student.
As a safety precaution, the affected areas, including a bathroom, the adjacent hallway, a storage room and two humanities classrooms have been cordoned off.
Cleaning crews are onsite vacuuming the water and waste. A plumber has been called in to resolve the blockage.
DES Director Mark Ray urged students to be mindful of how they utilise the school facilities. “This is your school. Please respect and care for it as you would your own home. By properly using its facilities you can help to ensure a clean and safe learning environment for everyone.”
DES thanks the staff and students for their cooperation and will provide further updates as necessary.
