Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC) and the Utility Regulation and Competition Office (URCO) have agreed on a new path to meet Grand Cayman’s growing energy needs. CUC will withdraw its previous application for new generation capacity and submit an updated plan by September 5, outlining how the island will meet projected energy demand from 2027 onwards.
The updated agreement recognizes that hybrid solar systems with battery storage may now be counted as firm, reliable power, potentially opening the door to more renewable energy projects. Both CUC and URCO are also working to modernize CUC’s transmission and distribution licence to reflect regulatory and infrastructure changes.
Additionally, URCO has launched a new request for proposals for dispatchable photovoltaic projects, with bids open until October 2. CUC says it remains focused on affordability, reliability, and safety as it works toward a cleaner energy future for Grand Cayman.
