The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is advising members of the public that garbage collection service and the intake of scrap metals, derelict vehicles and equipment at the George Town Landfill have been resumed.

A delay in the delivery of the garbage collection is expected as this service was suspended on Monday in anticipation of the passage of Hurricane Ian. The DEH seeks the public’s understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

DEH Director, Richard Simms is complementing residents for the important contribution in minimizing the quantity of potential debris from their properties in preparation for the passage of Hurricane Ian. “The impact from Hurricane Ian in terms of debris was very light. We want to thank members of the public as their preparation had a positive impact on the amount of debris post-hurricane. We experience a lot of traffic at the landfills on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when residents complied with the guidelines provided to remove potential debris from their properties,” he said.

Due to the low volume of post-hurricane debris, the temporary sites will not be activated. Residents are encouraged to use the 24-hour drop-off site at the entrance of the George Town landfill for the disposal of small amounts of waste from residential customers, if necessary.
