Following the inaugural event in January 2025 and a second race in October 2025, the Derek Larner Memorial Run continues to grow as a celebration of Derek’s life and the values he held close: running, community, and supporting others. The event will now return annually each October, with the third race taking place at Cricket Square on Sunday, 25 October 2026. Participants of all ages and abilities are invited to take part across four race categories: the 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Kids 5K.
The event was created to honour the life and legacy of Derek Larner, a passionate runner, coach, and mentor who made a lasting impact on Cayman’s running and wider community. As the founder of Race Caribbean and 345 Athletics Club (now Vision Academy 345), Derek dedicated himself to encouraging others through sport and creating opportunities for athletes of all ages to achieve their goals.
The event supports Jasmine Palliative & Hospice Care and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society (CICS), two organisations providing vital care, support, and services to individuals and families across the Cayman Islands.
The 2025 race raised a total of KYD $19,500 for Jasmine and CICS, with each organisation receiving $9,750. The donation reflects the generosity of the runners, sponsors, volunteers, and wider Cayman community who helped make the race possible.
Derek’s wife, Laura Larner, shared, “We’re so excited to bring the Derek Larner Memorial Run back for another year and see the Cayman community come together in Derek’s memory. Derek loved running, but he loved the people and connections that came with it even more. This event is a chance to celebrate his life, keep his passion for running alive, and support two organisations doing incredible work in our community.”
