DG's 5K Builds Momentum Following Successful Little Cayman Event
General, Government
18 March 2026, 06:48 PM

The 2026 Deputy Governor's 5K Challenge is building to a landmark finish, following successful races in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman that together demonstrated the community spirit driving the island-wide event. With both Sister Islands legs now complete, all eyes turn to Grand Cayman for the grand finale to be held Sunday, 29 March.

It will be the last race to be led by Deputy Governor Honourable Franz Manderson, who retires in July.

The DG's 5K got underway on 8 March, in Cayman Brac, where participants turned out in strong numbers to start the Challenge on an energetic note. Deputy Governor Manderson was joined by DG's 5K Committee Chair Jennifer Ahearn, Financial Secretary Kenneth Jefferson, and Chief Nursing Officer Felicia McLean, who together celebrated the completion of the Brac race with runners and walkers from across the community. The event set a spirited tone for the races to follow.

A week later, on Sunday, 15 March, Little Cayman hosted what became a record-breaking leg of the challenge, welcoming its largest turnout to date with 80 participants on the start line. In a display of inter-island solidarity, a group of participants travelled from Cayman Brac by boat specifically to join the event, a gesture that captured the inclusive community spirit that defines the DG's 5K Challenge. Deputy Governor Manderson was on hand to lead the start and greet participants at the finish line, alongside Little Cayman residents who cheered runners to the end.

In commenting on the turnout for the 5K Challenge to date, Honourable Franz Manderson stated, "The Sister Islands have shown what this challenge is all about, our community coming together for causes that matter. As we head into the final race on Sunday, 29 March, and the last I will lead as Deputy Governor, I encourage everyone in Grand Cayman to register and join us."

This year's event supports the Breast Cancer Foundation, Special Olympics Cayman Islands and Jasmine.

Members of the public are encouraged to register online at www.racecaribbean.com. Registration fees are $25 for adults (18 and older) and $10 for children under 18. Online registration closes on Saturday, 28 March. In-person registration will not be offered this year. Race package pick up will take place on Thursday, 26 March and Friday, 27 March from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the public lobby at the Government Administration Building.
