The Cayman Islands Drug Rehabilitation Court celebrated the graduation of four participants on 10 September 2026 in Courtroom 5, marking the programme’s final graduation ceremony for the year.
The graduation marked the successful completion of the programme by participants who have worked through the structured process of rehabilitation, accountability and recovery, supported by the Drug Rehabilitation Court team.
With alcohol identified as the primary substance of concern for three of the four graduates, Chief Magistrate Her Honour Angelyn Hernandez used her remarks at the ceremony to reflect particularly on alcohol use and recovery.
She highlighted the challenges associated with alcohol misuse, including the fact that its widespread availability and social acceptance can sometimes make harmful patterns of use more difficult to recognise and address. Her remarks encouraged graduates to remain mindful of the progress they had made and the commitment required to sustain their recovery beyond the programme.
The Drug Rehabilitation Court provides a therapeutic approach within the criminal justice system for eligible participants whose offending is connected to substance misuse. Through judicial supervision and coordinated support, the programme seeks to address factors contributing to offending while encouraging rehabilitation and reducing the risk of reoffending.
The four graduates were the final cohort scheduled to complete the programme in 2026. In total, 10 participants graduated from the Drug Rehabilitation Court during the year, reflecting the continued work of participants, the Drug Court team and partner agencies in supporting rehabilitation and recovery.
The Judiciary congratulates all of this year’s graduates on reaching this important milestone.
