Each year, September eight is recognised as International Literacy Day. This year's theme was 'Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces'.

Minister for Education, Hon. Juliana O'Connor-Connolly remarked, "I am pleased that a day has been set aside for us to reflect on the importance of literacy and education in providing our people with the requisite knowledge and skills to positively contribute to the development of this nation and its economy."

Minister O'Connor-Connolly also encouraged parents and other community stakeholders' continuous support for the Ministry's efforts to improve the quality of education and promote lifelong learning.

Several community partners seemed to share similar sentiments.

Yesterday (8 September), more than 20 persons, including representatives from LIFE Cayman, visited the Red Bay Primary School at intervals throughout the day to volunteer with a range of activities, such as a Mini Oratorical Competition, a Word Pageant and Read Aloud Sessions.

MoE Acting Chief Officer Lyneth Monteith was among the volunteers. She engaged in a Read Aloud session with a group of Year 4 students.

Ms. Monteith commented, "Today's activities gave me a wonderful opportunity to interact with some of our students and observe their comprehension and listening skills firsthand. I am truly impressed by their focus as I read the story and their participation during the ensuing discussion."

Acting Principal Mr. Ryan Dale was pleased with the day's outcome.

He said, "Yesterday was a successful day, and our scholars enjoyed the experience of being read to by several of our community partners, ministry representatives and key stakeholders.

As we continue to ensure that our scholars develop a love and appreciation for reading, I take this opportunity to thank our parents for their continued support of our school and for working with the children to ensure that reading is happening at home and school."
