Four men have been formally charged following the interception of a vessel carrying a large quantity of suspected ganja in Cayman waters last week.
In the early hours of Thursday, 14 August, the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG), with support from the RCIPS Air Operations Unit, intercepted a vessel with four men on board during a maritime patrol. The vessel was found to be carrying more than 1,500 lbs of suspected ganja. The men were detained and handed over to the RCIPS for investigation.
Three of the men, ages 39, 45 and 64, all from Jamaica, have since been charged with Illegal Trafficking of Ganja, Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, and Conspiracy to Import Ganja.
The fourth man, a 38-year-old from West Bay, has been charged with the same drug-related offenses, along with three counts of Illegal Landing and three counts of Human Smuggling.
All four appeared in court on Monday, 18 August, where they were remanded in custody. They are scheduled to return on Wednesday, 20 August, for a further hearing.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
