Downtown George Town came alive this past Monday 22 January for a day long celebration of Caymanian culture in honour of National Heroes Day. Under the theme of “Celebrating Cultural Artists and Creatives”, the day began with the customary Awards Presentation in Heroes Square. Despite a temporary delay due to an unexpected rain shower, the morning revered the memory of Cayman’s National Heroes, and celebrated the works of the 2024 honourees.

In the afternoon, Cardinall Avenue was transformed into an effervescent hub of Caymanian culture. District heritage committees from throughout the Cayman Islands hosted multiple displays of traditional crafts, food and art for the public to enjoy. Emcees Jevaughnie “Jevy” Ebanks and Mona Lisa Meade guided the audience through a high-energy programme, featuring performances by Cayman’s best in music, dance and drama.

Minister for Border Control, Labour and Culture, Hon. Dwayne Seymour stated, "I am immensely proud to witness the success of the 2024 National Heroes Day, where we came together as a nation to honor and celebrate the remarkable individuals who have made profound contributions to our society. Their contributions remind us of the strength that lies within our diverse and resilient community. As Minister, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to making this day a resounding success, fostering a sense of unity and shared pride in our national identity."

The theme for the 2025 Heroes Day celebration will be “Celebrating the Icons of Business and Entrepreneurship: A Tribute to Caymanian business ingenuity, creativity, successes, hard work, innovation and leadership”. The Ministry of Border Control, Labour and Culture is expected to begin its call for nominations later this year. For more information, visit gov.ky.
