The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens has launched its 22nd annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities.

The official launch was on Monday Sept 30, 2019 at Abacus Restaurant in Camana Bay.  The event started off with a bang, as a group of young people from Radiance Dance Studio and Cayman Islands National Dance Studio performed in a Flash Mob, which was a crowd pleaser.  The agenda for the evening included a message from the Health Minister the Honourable Dwayne Seymour, delivered by Acting Chief Officer Nancy Bernard.  The club was congratulated for continuing its campaign, to raise the public’s awareness about Breast Cancer Awareness. Glenroy Henry, JN Money’s Cayman Islands Country Manager and Event Sponsor, also delivered a congratulatory message at the launch.

The campaign, which is held in October every year, provides educational sessions to the public and mammogram vouchers to enable women to have mammogram screenings, free of cost to them.

Other activities held to mark the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month including a Ladies Slumber Party on Sept 28, 2019, hosted by DMS Broadcasting at the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort.  All funds raised will go towards the activities of the programme.  A church service to mark the month’s activities was also held on Sunday Sept 29, 2019 at the Cayman Islands Baptist Church on Pedro Castle Road.

There are many activities scheduled to take place throughout the month of October, to help raise funds to pay for mammograms and assist breast cancer patients who are going through treatment and need assistance in various areas including the purchase of groceries, transportation and assistance with accommodations, when undergoing treatment overseas.   Each year the club pays between $30,000 and $50,000 for mammogram screenings and all funds raised help to cover those costs.

Women who meet the established medical criteria receive mammogram vouchers at the district awareness meetings, which are redeemable at the Health Services Authority, Medlab, CTMH Doctor’s Hospital and Ocean Medical.

Other fundraising events, to allow members of the public to contribute to the programme were the Brenda Tibbetts-Lund 5K Memorial Run/Walk at Kaibo and the Day of Beauty at Sameena’s Beauty Centre.  Upcoming fundraising events include this weekend’s Brenda Tibbetts Lund 5K & 10K Memorial Walk/Run at the 7 Mile Public Beach, which is scheduled for 13th October 2019 6.00am  Registration Available online www.CaymanActive.com or the Lions Club of Tropical Garden’s Pink Shop and on 20th October 2019, the Cut-A-Thon is scheduled for 2.00pm - 6.00pm at Eclipze Hair Design at Camana Bay.
