The Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Department of Education Services (DES) have released the Education Data Report for the 2021-2022 academic year.

"Each year, we look forward to the completion of the Education Report, which captures and analyses critical data on the performance of Year 6, Year 11 and Year 12 students enrolled in our public schools," states MOE Acting Chief Officer Ms. Lyneth Monteith.

"The 2021/2022 report depicts overall trends similar to those observed in the preceding academic year, with improvements in some areas," Ms. Monteith continued.

Notable among the report's highlights was that more than half of the Year 6 cohort were either at or exceeded the expected level in grammar, punctuation, and spelling (GAPS), based on results of the Key Stage Two Standard Assessment Tests administered in May 2022.

In addition, 46 per cent of the students demonstrated proficiency in writing, while 42 per cent were either at or exceeded the expected level in mathematics or reading.

The Education Report further revealed a 13-percentage point increase in the number of Year 11 students who exceeded the National Expected Standard of five Level 2 passes (at Grades 1, 2 or 3), including math and English, in the 2022 sitting of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) when compared to 2017.

Department of Education Services Director Mr. Mark Ray remarked, "I commend the 136 students that attained passes in five or more subjects last year. Their success indicates our schools' ability to support our children's learning."

Mr. Ray also underscored the need to address existing school improvement needs to ensure that some less capable students are not left behind.

He added, "We have used information gleaned from the data report, school improvement plans and other reports on school and student progress to determine the action plans for schools and are working on collating the action plans into a cohesive document to guide the next steps."

Also striking was that the Year 11 cohorts' achievement in subjects such as English and science exceeded their Year 9 Cognitive Abilities Test Fourth Edition (CAT4) predictions by 23 and 24 percentage points, respectively.

Improvements were likewise evidenced among the Year 12 cohort as the percentage of students who obtained five or more Level 2 passes, including math and English, increased by 11 percentage points on average between 2017 and 2022, with the percentage of students attaining acceptable grades in math and English also growing by ten percentage points during the same period.
