On Wednesday, 4 June, the Ministry of Education & Training officially launched its Capacity Building Workshop Series designed to strengthen leadership within private schools across the Cayman Islands. This initiative aims to enhance school leaders’ skills in driving continuous improvement, self-evaluation, and collaboration, aligned with the Office of Education Standards (OES) Performance Standards and Ministry policies.

A total of 19 schools were represented by their leaders at the launch event, underscoring a strong commitment across the private education sector to leadership development and school improvement.

The workshop series was spearheaded by Anthony Alleyne, Senior School Improvement Officer for Private Schools, in collaboration with various units within the Ministry. Mr. Alleyne initiated the programme after identifying a clear need to better support both new and experienced principals in navigating the OES inspection process and driving sustainable school improvement.  “Through analysis of past reports and direct engagement with school leaders, we recognised common challenges that require focused attention. This series is tailored to equip private school leaders with the tools and strategies necessary to lead meaningful change and continuous improvement,” said Mr. Alleyne.

Over a 15-month period, the workshops will cover critical topics including data-driven school improvement, support for students with Additional Learning Support Needs (ALSN) and Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND), quality teaching and learning practices, measuring student attainment and progress, and best practices in mathematics instruction.

Minister for Education & Training, Hon. Rolston Anglin, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative: “This workshop series represents a vital step in our commitment to excellence in education. By strengthening the capacity of private school leaders, the Ministry is fostering continuous improvement, inclusivity, and collaboration across all education sectors in the Cayman Islands. I am confident that this initiative will enhance leadership effectiveness and ultimately enrich student outcomes.”

The launch event provided an open forum for school leaders to offer feedback on the workshop schedule, ask questions, and build connections with colleagues and key Ministry personnel. Attendees also heard presentations from partners such as the Department of Children and Family Services and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

Adam Winton, Director of Curriculum and Professional Learning at Cayman International School, echoed the value of the sessions: “It was inspiring to have school leaders together, aligned on the same goals and information. These workshops will provide an excellent opportunity to build our leadership capacity and unify efforts across schools. I look forward to collaborating with fellow educators to enhance education quality and student achievement island-wide.”
