GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (26 June 2026) – Staff from the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) recently participated in the department's annual safety and professional development workshop, strengthening their knowledge of industry best practices and reinforcing MRCU's commitment to continuous learning, workplace safety and operational excellence.

The training was delivered by representatives from Clarke, a long-standing partner of MRCU that has supported mosquito control operations in the Cayman Islands for more than 25 years. Clarke has served the public health industry for more than 80 years and works with mosquito control programmes throughout the world.
This year's workshop covered a range of topics designed to support staff in their day-to-day responsibilities, including pesticide safety, regulatory requirements, proper use of product labels and safety data sheets, spill response procedures and strategies for building a workplace culture where safety is a shared responsibility.

Staff also participated in a practical spill response demonstration, providing hands-on experience and reinforcing procedures that help ensure the safe handling and application of mosquito control products.
"Safety is at the heart of everything we do," said George Sommerfeld, Senior Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Clarke. "These workshops are designed to provide employees with the tools and resources they need to make safe decisions every day. At the end of the day, the most important thing is ensuring everyone returns home safely to their friends and family."

Frank Clarke, Vice President of Strategic Development and Key Accounts for Clarke, said ongoing training is an important part of responsible mosquito control operations.
"It is essential that staff understand how to properly handle and apply mosquito control products," he said. "This training helps protect employees, the environment and the residents of the Cayman Islands. Providing this type of stewardship and support is an important part of our long-standing relationship with MRCU."

MRCU Director Dr. Alan Wheeler said investing in staff training helps ensure the department continues to deliver effective mosquito control services while maintaining the highest professional standards.
"The work carried out by MRCU plays an important role in protecting public health across the Cayman Islands," said Dr. Wheeler.

"Ensuring our staff receive regular training helps us maintain the high standards residents expect while supporting our mission of reducing mosquito related risks and improving quality of life for our communities. Well trained staff are essential to maintaining safe, effective and environmentally responsible mosquito control operations."

The annual workshop forms part of MRCU's ongoing commitment to ensuring staff have access to current training, industry best practices and professional development opportunities. By investing in the knowledge and skills of its workforce, MRCU continues to support broader Cayman Islands Government priorities<https://gov.ky/web/cigpriorities> focused on protecting public health, safeguarding the environment and building safer, healthier and more resilient communities.
