The Poinciana Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) will open its doors to the public on Saturday, 10 October 2026, from 10am until 3pm, inviting members of the public to learn more about the centre, its services and the role of psychosocial rehabilitation in supporting recovery and community reintegration.
Held under the World Mental Health Day theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” the Open Day will provide an opportunity for members of the public to engage with Poinciana staff and partner agencies, ask questions and gain a better understanding of the Centre and the people it serves and view the work of the residents at PRC.
The event will take place at the Poinciana Rehabilitation Centre, 37 High Rock Drive, East End.
Visitors can expect information booths, a panel discussion followed by a question-and-answer session, virtual tours of the centre, family-friendly activities, including a bouncing castle and game truck for the children, as well as prizes and other activities.
“The Open Day is an important opportunity for us to welcome the community, answer questions and help people understand what Poinciana is designed to do. Rehabilitation is about much more than treatment; it is about supporting our residents to regain skills, build confidence and move towards greater independence and meaningful participation in their communities. We want the public to see Poinciana as a place of recovery, dignity, hope and opportunity,” said Mrs. Marcia Mullings-Thompson, Director of Poinciana Rehabilitation Centre.
PRC is a tertiary-care residential mental health facility operated under the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability. The centre forms part of the continuum of mental health care in the Cayman Islands and provides a safe, therapeutic environment for people with serious and persistent mental illness who require structured residential rehabilitation.
The centre's approach is centred on holistic care, rehabilitation and recovery, with the ultimate goal of helping residents develop greater independence and successfully reintegrate into their families and communities.
Poinciana has capacity for 54 residents across nine residential cottages, supported by administrative, clinical, recreational and other programmes. Each cottage provides six individual bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, along with shared living, laundry and outdoor spaces.
Services at Poinciana include psychiatric and nursing care, psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions, occupational and recreational therapy, vocational skills training, social work and community reintegration support. Residents may also participate in programmes designed to strengthen practical life skills, social skills, financial awareness, medication management and employment-related abilities.
Dr Marc Lockhart, Consultant Psychiatrist and Chair of the Poinciana Mental Health Advisory Council, said:
“Poinciana is part of Cayman’s continuing development of a mental health system that recognises recovery, dignity and community inclusion as essential elements of care. This Open Day gives us an opportunity to engage directly with the community, dispel misconceptions and listen to the experiences and perspectives of the people we serve. We hope residents will come, ask questions, learn about the work taking place at Poinciana and join us in building a community where people living with mental illness are supported to achieve their fullest potential.”
