RCIPS is currently investigating reports involving fraudulent vehicle sale advertisements on Facebook and is encouraging anyone who has fallen victim to contact the police.
This past weekend, officers arrested a man, age 35 residing in George Town, on suspicion of obtaining property by deception in relation to an incident where a member of the public paid a deposit for a vehicle which had been advertised on Facebook. After receiving the payment, the seller ceased communications. The man is suspected to have been involved in other similar incidents, which are also under investigation.
Persons are advised not to exchange any money for vehicle leasing or purchases without first verifying the legitimacy of the ads, either through in-person viewings or other reliable, traceable means.
Do not share identification documents, banking or personal information without first confirming that an advertisement or offer is legitimate. Investigators have noted that fraudsters often request copies of IDs and utility bills as part of the supposed sale or lease agreement. Providing this information can put individuals at risk as fraudsters may use it to commit offenses or identity a victim’s home address.
Residents who found themselves communicating with a 1-868 area code number regarding vehicle leasing or sale are advised to verify the legitimacy and if suspected to be fraudulent, cease communication and report the matter to the RCIPS by contacting 949-4222.
