Police Warn of Ongoing WhatsApp Impersonation Scams
Police/Court
01 October 2026, 05:14 AM

The RCIPS is warning the public about the latest tactic in an ongoing impersonation scam targeting members of the community through WhatsApp.

In recent reports, scammers have gained access to WhatsApp accounts associated with local phone numbers by requesting and obtaining the six-digit WhatsApp verification code from victims. Once they gain unauthorised access, scammers send urgent requests for money to the account’s contacts.

The RCIPS is therefore advising the public to never share their six-digit WhatsApp verification code with anyone and take the following precautions to protect their accounts, and limit the exposure of their sensitive personal information:

  1. Turn on WhatsApp two-step verification that can be found in the settings menu within WhatsApp.
  2. Set up multi-factor authentication on all online accounts frequently accessed through mobile devices such as email and social media accounts.
  3. Review your WhatsApp privacy settings.
  4. Be cautious of unexpected links, messages and requests for personal or financial information.
  5. If you receive a request for money through WhatsApp from a phone number you recognise, call the individual directly to confirm the legitimacy of the requests being made. Do not send money until you have confirmed who you are communicating with.
  6. Block and report all suspicious WhatsApp accounts.

The RCIPS is urging members of the public to assist community members who may be more vulnerable by checking that these security measures are in place on their mobile devices and WhatsApp accounts.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this scam or believe that their WhatsApp account has been compromised is encouraged to report the matter to the police at 949-4222.

Investigations into these reports remain ongoing.
