The Public Health Department, in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Red Cross and the Cayman AIDS Foundation, will offer free HIV screenings as it joins the global community in observing World AIDS Day on 1 December, under the theme “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response.”

This year’s theme underscores the need to revitalise HIV prevention, testing, and treatment efforts in the wake of recent global and regional disruptions. It calls for renewed commitment, innovation, and community partnerships to ensure that no one is left behind.

As part of the 2025 observance, free, confidential HIV screenings will be offered to the public across Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this important health service, which remains a key pillar of early detection and prevention.

Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez, Director of Primary Health Care Services, emphasised the continued importance of HIV awareness and testing: “The disruptions of recent years have reminded us that public health threats do not pause, and neither can our response. Early detection, prevention, and access to care are essential. By working closely with our partners, we are strengthening our ability to reach people where they are and ensuring that HIV services remain accessible to all.”

The Cayman Islands Red Cross and the Cayman AIDS Foundation will support community mobilisation, outreach, and education throughout the week, focusing on reducing stigma, increasing knowledge, and encouraging healthier behaviours.

Nurse Mitchell Campbell, Public Health’s HIV/STI Programme Coordinator, highlighted the significance of collective responsibility: “Transforming the AIDS response requires every part of our community—healthcare teams, civil society, and individuals—to play a role. HIV testing is quick, confidential, and lifesaving. This World AIDS Day, we invite all to whom this message may apply to take that important step for their health and well-being.”

Free HIV screenings will be available from 1–6 December 2025, at the Public Health Department at Smith Road Medical Centre (2nd Floor), the Health Services Authority (HSA’s) District Health Centres across the islands, the Cayman Islands Red Cross and the Cayman AIDS Foundation. All screenings are free, confidential, and available on a walk-in basis.

The Public Health Department encourages participation regardless of gender or risk perception to participate in this initiative, as HIV testing remains one of the most effective tools for prevention, early treatment and long-term health management. For more information on screening times and outreach activities, the public may contact the Public Health Department at 244-2889 or visit www.hsa.ky.
