Police/Court
24 June 2025, 05:04 AM

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) announces the launch of Operation Clyro, a comprehensive road safety campaign aimed at significantly reducing dangerous driving behaviours across the islands. The intensive operation will commence on Monday, June 23, 2025, and conclude on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Operation Clyro will see an increased police presence on roads throughout Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, with officers specifically targeting key violations that contribute to accidents and fatalities. The primary focus areas for enforcement during this period will include:

  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI): Strict enforcement against drunk driving and driving under the influence of drugs will be a top priority, with sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols.
  • Speeding: Officers will identify and apprehend drivers exceeding posted speed limits, a leading cause of severe collisions.
  • Poor Driving Behaviour: This encompasses dangerous manoeuvres, reckless driving, distracted driving (including mobile phone use), and disregarding traffic signals.
  • Other Road Violations: This includes, but is not limited to, seatbelt infractions, expired registrations, unlicensed driving, and vehicle defects.

"Our goal with Operation Clyro is to enhance the safety of all road users in the Cayman Islands," stated Acting Chief Inspector Fernando Soto. "We continue to observe concerning trends in certain driving behaviours, and this concentrated effort is a proactive measure to address these issues. We urge every driver to take personal responsibility, obey traffic laws, and make safe choices behind the wheel. The lives of our community depend on it."

The RCIPS encourages all motorists to plan, designate a sober driver, avoid distractions, and adhere to speed limits. Pedestrians and cyclists are also reminded to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines, and all road users are being encouraged to share the road with courtesy and with safety first in mind.

This campaign underscores the RCIPS's commitment to creating safer roads for residents and visitors alike. The public’s cooperation is vital to the success of Operation Clyro and the ongoing effort to prevent road traffic collisions.
