Students from the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI), earned 2nd place in the annual Caribbean Student Colloquium, a part of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week events in New York. The team tied for second place with the University of the West Indies Mona Campus team.

CTO’s student colloquium brings together hospitality students from around the region and challenges them to create a sustainable initiative. The Colloquium competition required students to research and present freestyle, a practical sustainable tourism project for the Caribbean which upon implementation, will provide a viable concept and source of income. This year the UCCI students created a regional festival called PAWU (the Caribe word for Island), which would be hosted by various countries in the Caribbean focusing on the region’s unique music, food and art.

The students presented PAWU as a sustainable festival designed to empower and create a community for people to connect through their roots with historical and untold stories while being entertained with activities over a three-day theme (past, present and future).
