Sustainable Cayman is pleased to announce the appointment of Caymanian researcher Rickeem Lashley to its Executive Committee, recognising his longstanding contribution to the organisation and his role in environmental research, conservation policy and youth leadership.

Rickeem is no newcomer to Sustainable Cayman. An Ambassador with the organisation since January 2023, Rickeem joined its delegation to the Global Sustainable Islands Summit in Gran Canaria, Spain, in April alongside Ambassadors Soleil Parkinson and Matthew Feitelberg and Executive Committee member Dejea Lyons, where discussions highlighted the shared challenges facing island communities, including  beach erosion, biodiversity loss and environmental restoration .

Currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Essex through the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme, Rickeem's research explores the social and ecological impacts of conservation and restoration, with particular relevance to the Cayman Islands and other UK Overseas Territories.

He holds degrees in Marine and Freshwater Biology and Marine Systems and Policies, with professional experience spanning the Department of Environment, Central Caribbean Marine Institute and Water Authority – Cayman. He has served as a Ranger with the Cayman Islands Mangrove Rangers and is a member of the National Trust's Youth Advisory Council and has represented Caymanian youth at international environmental forums, including COP26, COP28 and the 2025 UN Ocean Conference.

“Rickeem’s appointment reflects something we care deeply about at Sustainable Cayman: creating opportunities for young Caymanians to move from environmental awareness and participation into research, advocacy and leadership with meaningful careers that benefit our islands,” said Melanie Carmichael, Controller of Sustainable Cayman.  “He brings valuable Caymanian research expertise and fresh perspective to our leadership, strengthening our commitment to evidence-based advocacy, community participation and long-term environmental stewardship. We are proud to see him helping shape a more sustainable future for the Cayman Islands.

“Cayman’s coastal ecosystems and the communities that depend on them face real pressure from climate change and biodiversity loss,” said Rickeem. “I am honoured to join Sustainable Cayman and to help build solutions that bring science, policy and community voices together, so that the benefits of conservation are shared fairly.”

Sustainable Cayman, founded in 2014 and officially recognised as a charitable organisation in April 2022, remains committed to providing sensible solutions to sustainability challenges. With the continued support of the Cayman Islands’ community, international organisations and the dedication of a diverse team of youth volunteers and professionals, the grassroots organisation looks forward to making a lasting impact in the Cayman Islands of today and for future generations.
