Water Authority–Cayman is proud to announce the recipients of its 2026 Scholarships to Jaheem Hayles and Lincoln Rankin, both pursuing engineering degrees at universities in the United Kingdom.

Both awardees share a strong interest in the role of engineering in building sustainable, reliable infrastructure for the Cayman Islands, from water production and distribution to the wider utilities sector that supports the Islands’ continued growth.

Mr Hayles, recipient of the Authority’s Annual Scholarship, will pursue a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham. In 2025, he completed a summer internship with the Water Authority’s Water Resources & Quality Control laboratory, where he demonstrated strong leadership and a keen interest in the Authority’s work. A graduate of Layman E. Scott Sr High School in Cayman Brac, he received the school’s Lead Student and Outstanding Prefect awards. He completed an Associate of Science Degree in Biology and Chemistry at the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI), where he has been named to the Dean’s List. Mr Hayles has represented the Cayman Islands as a Cadet Corps Officer, holding certifications including Master Cadet Cycle 1 and Advanced Drill Instructor.

Mr Rankin, recipient of a Supplemented Bonded Scholarship, will pursue a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University in Wales. A graduate of John Gray High School, he went on to earn an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology from UCCI, where he was named to both the Dean’s List and President’s List for outstanding achievement. Mr Rankin successfully completed an apprenticeship as a Network Engineer Technician with Flow. He has expressed his intention to return to the Water Authority to contribute to the design, calculation, and maintenance of the Authority’s pumping systems, pipe networks, and mechanical equipment.

Water Authority Director Dr Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said the Authority was proud to support this year’s awardees. “Supporting Caymanian students in achieving their educational aspirations is a key priority for the Authority, particularly in the areas of STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics,” she stated. “These disciplines play a vital role in the water industry, and we are proud to contribute to the academic and professional growth of Mr Hayles and Mr Rankin. We extend our best wishes to them as they continue their studies.”

Every year the Authority offers a scholarship of up to CI$40,000 to a suitably qualified Caymanian to obtain an undergraduate academic or technical/vocational degree or diploma in a field of study relevant to our work. The Authority will begin accepting applications for its 2027 Scholarships and Grants in November 2026. For more information, please visit www.waterauthority.ky/scholarships-how-to-apply.
