Cayman Islands Observes Day of the Seafarer
General
26 June 2026, 05:35 AM

The Cayman Islands joins the international maritime community in observing the Day of the Seafarer on 25 June 2026, recognising the stalwart contribution of seafarers to global trade, economic stability, and everyday life.

This year’s observance is under the theme “Carrying World Trade, Carrying the Risks,” highlighting both the essential role seafarers play in sustaining global supply chains and the personal and professional risks they face at sea.

The observance is being led through an inter-agency collaboration between the Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce, the Ministry of Social Development and Innovation, the Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands and the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands. Together, these entities are coordinating national awareness activities and stakeholder engagement to honour Caymanian seafarers, maritime professionals, and the wider global seafaring community.

Premier and Minister for Financial Services and Commerce, the Hon. André Ebanks, says "the Day of the Seafarer reminds us that over 80% of global trade is transported by sea, making seafarers indispensable to the functioning of modern economies, including the Cayman Islands as a globally recognised financial services centre of excellence and well-regulated maritime sector. The Cayman Islands, given its cherished seafaring heritage, naturally continues to recognise the deep interconnection between maritime activity, economic resilience, and social well-being."

Cayman Islands Overseas Maritime Representative Max Mifsud added that "the Cayman Islands is proud to stand in solidarity with seafarers around the world. Their work is often unseen, yet it is fundamental to the stability of international trade and the availability of goods and services that communities rely on every day. This year’s theme reminds us of the human dimension behind global commerce and the importance of ensuring the safety, dignity, and welfare of those at sea.”

The Cayman Islands Government encourages residents, businesses, and maritime stakeholders to acknowledge and thank seafarers for their service and sacrifice. The community is encouraged to attend the Anchors Away Fun Day at Seafarers Hall, 11 Victory Avenue, on Saturday, 27 June 2026 from 1:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. Admission is free and the event is open to everyone.
