The Office of the Ombudsman is joining counterparts worldwide to mark Ombuds Day 2026 and highlight the importance of independent oversight in promoting fairness, transparency, accountability and good governance.
Observed annually on the second Thursday of October, Ombuds Day raises awareness of the profession and its public value. This year’s theme, “Office of Options”, focuses on impact and public understanding of the role of the Ombudsman as an integral part of the governance framework for the Cayman Islands.
Supporting fairness, transparency and accountability
Established in 2017 by the Parliament, the Office of the Ombudsman is an impartial and independent institution that provides its services free to the public free of charge. All matters are handled with confidentiality and respect for privacy. When people need answers, accountability, transparency, or protection, the Office of the Ombudsman provides options. Across its two divisions and five areas of jurisdiction, the Office helps safeguard fairness, transparency, and good governance through:
Government complaints handling (maladministration), police complaints, freedom of information appeals, data protection and whistleblower protection.
Whether through guidance, mediation, investigation, or independent review, the Office provides accessible pathways to resolution, helping to ensure that every voice and every concern is given fair consideration.
Demonstrating our impact
According to the Ombudsman’s 2025 Annual Report, the office answered 372 inquiries, received 389 cases and resolved 398. Decisions, investigation reports and other outcomes are published on the Ombudsman’s website.
Making information more accessible: launching our YouTube channel
To mark Ombuds Day, the Ombudsman is launching a YouTube channel featuring short, accessible videos on its services and the rights and protections available to the public; including guidance on freedom of information, data protection and the office’s wider role.
Know your rights. Know your Ombudsman.
Ombuds Day follows closely on the heels of International Day for Universal Access to Information, locally recognised as Right to Know Day on 28 September. During this observance, the office went on local radio and social media to highlight its role in the freedom of information process and provided practical guidance to help members of the public better understand and exercise their rights under the Freedom of Information Act.
As Cayman continues to evolve, the office remains committed to being a modern, accessible and responsive institution that provides options for everyone, regardless of circumstance. Through its work, the office reinforces a simple but powerful principle: when people have access to independent oversight, information, and protection, they have options; and when they have options, fairness, accountability and trust can flourish.
A commitment to public education extends across the Ombudsman’s wider mandate. This Ombuds Day, the Office of the Ombudsman invites the public to learn more about their rights and the services available to them and to recognise the important role independent oversight plays in strengthening democracy and good governance in the Cayman Islands. Independent oversight is not only about responding when things go wrong. It also helps strengthen systems, protect rights, improve administrative practices and build public confidence in institutions.
The Office of the Ombudsman celebrates Ombuds Day 2026 as the Office of Options because every concern deserves a pathway, every question deserves an answer, and everyone deserves the opportunity to be heard.
