CBC Reminds Public of Vehicle Import Restrictions
Customs and Border Control
14 September 2026, 04:55 AM

The Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control Service (CBC) is reminding members of the public of the existing prohibition on the importation of vehicles whose model year is eight years or older into the Cayman Islands. Under Section 4A of the Customs and Border Control (Prohibited Goods) Order (2025 Revision), the importation of a vehicle whose model year is eight years or older is prohibited, subject to the applicable exemptions set out in Section 4A(2) of the Order. As the end of 2026 approaches, CBC is encouraging persons who are considering purchasing or importing a vehicle from overseas to pay particular attention to the applicable model year requirements and anticipated arrival dates. Accordingly: • During 2026, vehicles with a model year of 2018 or older are prohibited from importation, subject to applicable exemptions. • Vehicles with a 2019 model year must arrive in the Cayman Islands on or before 31 December 2026 to be eligible for lawful importation. • From 1 January 2027, vehicles with a model year of 2019 or older will be prohibited from importation. Vehicles arriving from that date must therefore have a model year of 2020 or newer. Consequently, a vehicle with a model year of 2019 or older that arrives in the Cayman Islands after 31 December 2026, and which does not fall within an applicable exemption under the Order, will be considered a prohibited import and will be subject to seizure by CBC.
CBC advises persons purchasing or importing vehicles from overseas to verify the model year and carefully consider shipping and expected arrival dates before completing a purchase or arranging shipment. Importers should also allow sufficient time for unforeseen shipping or logistical delays that could result in a vehicle arriving after the applicable deadline. Taking these precautions can help importers avoid the financial loss, inconvenience and additional costs that may arise where a vehicle does not meet the applicable import requirements upon arrival in the Cayman Islands. CBC remains committed to providing clear and timely information to assist importers and members of the public in understanding and complying with the Cayman Islands’ import requirements. For further information, contact CBC at 649-4579, email CBC.OnlineSupport@gov.ky, or visit gov.ky/web/cbc. Persons are also encouraged to review the relevant legislation before purchasing and importing a vehicle.
