Staff from the Department of Sports recently hosted Child Safeguarding Training in collaboration with the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) Unit as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection awareness and best practices ahead of the Department’s upcoming summer camp programmes. Held in alignment with Child Month, the training reinforced the importance of safeguarding children and young people participating in sports and recreational activities.
The training session, conducted on Friday, 29 May, focused on safeguarding principles, recognizing signs of abuse, reporting responsibilities and creating safe environments for children and young people participating in sports and recreational programmes.
Recognising the importance of safeguarding across the wider sporting community, the Department also invited representatives from various national sports associations to participate in the training.
Acting Director of Sports, Melinda Montemayor said the initiative reflects the Department’s continued commitment to prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children participating in its programmes and activities.
“As we prepare for our upcoming summer camps and youth programmes, it is important that parents and guardians feel confident their children are participating in safe, supportive and properly supervised environments,” said Ms. Montemayor. “Safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and we are pleased to partner with the MASH Unit and engage members of the sporting community in these important discussions.”
The Department of Sports continues to place strong emphasis on youth development, safety and the promotion of positive sporting experiences for children and young people across the Cayman Islands.
