Minister for Health, Environment and Sustainability, Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, has issued a video message to mark World Environmental Health Day 2026, highlighting the role of science, prevention and environmental health professionals in protecting communities across the Cayman Islands.
Observed annually on 26 September, this year’s theme, “Environmental Health: Standing with Science to Protect Communities,” focuses on the importance of evidence-based action in addressing environmental factors that can affect human health.
In her message, Minister Ebanks-Wilks highlights the everyday work of environmental health professionals in areas including food and water safety, air quality, waste management, sanitation, pest control and the identification of environmental hazards. She also recognises Department of Environmental Health staff and other professionals whose work translates scientific evidence into practical action to protect the community.
The Minister also links this year’s observance to the proposed Environmental Health Bill, 2026, which would establish the Cayman Islands’ first standalone Environmental Health Act and provide a dedicated legislative framework for environmental health.
Importantly, today, Friday 25 September, is the final day of public consultation on the Bill. The Ministry is encouraging residents, businesses, practitioners and other stakeholders to review the proposed legislation and submit their feedback before midnight tonight.
Minister Ebanks-Wilks said in her message that if members of the public take one action in recognition of World Environmental Health Day, it should be to review the proposed Bill and share their views before the consultation closes.
