The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) is investigating an ongoing phishing scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from RCIPS regarding overdue traffic fines.
The messages instruct recipients to click a link and make a payment to settle the alleged traffic fine.
The RCIPS is advising that the messages are fraudulent and part of an active scam being carried out by international fraudsters. Similar scams have been reported in other jurisdictions and are being actively investigated.
Some versions of the fraudulent message are written in French.
Screenshots of both versions of the text messages are being released to help members of the public identify them.
The links are not associated with the RCIPS or any Cayman Islands Government entity, and recipients should not click the link, should not make any payment, and delete the message immediately.
Members of the public are reminded to never assume that a text message is legitimate because it contains the name of a recognised government agency.
The public is also advised that the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and other Cayman Islands Government agencies will never request fee payment through text messages.
Anyone who has clicked the link and made a payment, should contact their financial institution immediately and contact 9-1-1 immediately to make a report to the police.
The matter remains under police investigation.
