Chinese cars have gone from a novelty to one of the most sought-after options on Cayman's roads, and Tony's Toys says it can barely keep them on the forecourt.
As the islands' only stockist of BYD and Jetour, Tony's Toys has seen demand climb sharply since October last year.
Vehicles are selling within days, and a growing number of customers are reserving cars before they land on the island. "Honestly, we can't keep them in stock," said Tony Williams, Managing Director of Tony's Toys. "A few years ago, people would ask us what BYD even was.
Now they're putting their names down for cars that are still on the ship.
Chinese cars have changed the automotive landscape in Cayman, and it's happened faster than anyone expected.
"Tony puts the surge down to value, technology and running costs. Both brands offer features that buyers would usually expect to pay a premium for, with ICE (internal combustion engines) and plug-in hybrid ranges. Where daily distances are short, and fuel prices are high, plug-in hybrids (PHEV) are perfect for island living - with a range of 120-150 miles on one charge. “One of our customers attests to the plug-in hybrid being amazing for travelling in Cayman.
They purchased their car over 2 years ago and have been to the gas station only 3 times since then!” said Tony.
Among the most unexpected features is the vehicles’ capability in water. The Jetour G700 offers a wading depth of over one metre, allowing drivers to cross deep water with confidence. For tight or challenging terrain, the G700 is also equipped with Tank Turn, a manoeuvre that enables the vehicle to pivot on the spot, like a military tank. "It's one of the first things that people ask about when they walk in: how practical are these vehicles for our island?" said Tony.
"We say Chinese cars are flooding the market, but they're also one of the few cars that can handle a flood. On our island, that gets people talking."
Tony's Toys expects demand to keep rising into 2027 and is increasing its orders to keep up.
Customers interested in BYD or Jetour models are encouraged to visit the showroom or register their interest early.
"If you've been thinking about it, don't wait too long," said Tony. "At the moment, they're gone almost as soon as they arrive."
