19 June 2026, 03:01 AM

The Michael Gourzong Memorial Classic returns to the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Field in Prospect on Saturday, 27 June, bringing together family, friends, athletes and community members to celebrate Michael's life and legacy ten years after his passing.

The day-long event will feature two of Michael's favourite sports – football and flag football – in a community tournament involving adult, youth and primary school players.

Organised by Michael's mother, Olga Gourzong, along with family, friends, the Cayman Islands Football Association, the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association and other supporters, the event honours Michael's memory while fostering the sense of community that was so important to him.

The Memorial Classic will begin at 9:30 a.m. with an official opening ceremony and environmentally friendly balloon release, followed by a full day of football and flag football matches. Spectators are encouraged to come out, support the players, reconnect with family and friends and celebrate the life of a young man who touched so many people.

Michael, who passed away at the age of 24, was a talented goalkeeper who played for Bodden Town Sports Club and Savannah United Church. Known for his enthusiasm, kindness and love of sport, he was deeply respected by teammates, friends and the wider community.

"Ten years later, Michael is still deeply loved and missed by all who knew him," said Mrs. Gourzong. "This Memorial Classic is a special way for our family and friends to honour his life, celebrate his passion for football and flag football, and bring people together in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship. We invite everyone to join us as we remember Michael and the joy he brought to our community."

The Michael Gourzong Memorial Classic is free to attend and all members of the public are welcome. For more information, contact Mrs. Gourzong on 916-3167.
