A touch rugby programme at HMP Fairbanks culminated in a closely contested match on 14 October 2026, bringing together women in custody, members of Cayman Rugby and officers from His Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service (HMCIPS). Correctional Counsellor Cottrell Ellis and Officer Cherine Usherwood developed the initiative in consultation with Cayman Rugby. It was built on the successful 28-Day Nutrition Challenge led by Officer Usherwood, encouraging women to maintain their progress towards healthier lifestyles. Launched on 19 August 2026 as a six-week non-contact rugby programme, it featured weekly coaching by Cayman Rugby representatives. The prisoners' enthusiasm led to its continuation. The programme promoted healthy lifestyles, mental and emotional wellbeing, and a sense of community through sport. The final match saw Cayman Rugby secure a narrow 13–11 victory over the One Love Rugby Team, which comprised women in custody, Cayman Rugby members and HMCIPS officers. The mixed team reflected the programme’s emphasis on cooperation and connection. HMCIPS extends its appreciation to Cayman Rugby Team Manager Mercedes Foy, Jazamine Gray and the entire Cayman Rugby Association for dedicating their time to teaching and encouraging the women throughout the programme, and Officer Usherwood for its coordination and logistical handling. The Service also recognises the HMP Fairbanks officers who supported the safe delivery of the sessions, with particular thanks to Officer Maxwell, who played for the One Love Rugby Team. Attendees included Michael Ebanks, Chief Officer for District Administration and Home Affairs; Lisa Malice, Deputy Chief Officer for District Administration and Home Affairs; Francis Kearns, Policy Advisor in the Governor’s Office; and Maxine Spalding, Acting Deputy Director for HMP Fairbanks. The women continue to exercise in the HMP Fairbanks gym and have their weight monitored, building on the programme’s momentum. The initiative highlights how community partnerships and sustained wellness activities can support personal development and rehabilitation. The programme illustrates how community partnerships can support constructive engagement and wellbeing for people in custody.
